Super Tic Tac Toe Nested Grids

Elevate the simple classic of noughts and crosses into a deep tactical challenge with Super Tic Tac Toe! In this version, each of the nine squares of a standard Tic-Tac-Toe board contains a smaller 3x3 grid. The square you choose in the local grid dictates which grid your opponent must play in next. It is a stunning modification of the standard Tic Tac Toe, requiring deep planning and spatial strategy.

The Concept of Nested Grid Strategy

Super Tic Tac Toe, also known as Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, was designed to turn the solvable, simple game of Tic-Tac-Toe into a complex strategic board game. In standard Tic-Tac-Toe, two perfect players will always end in a draw. By nesting the grids, the game introduces a mathematical complexity similar to chess. The Scratch edition offers clean visual highlighting of the active grids, making it easy to track turns and plan moves.

Core Rules & How to Win

The board consists of a large 3x3 grid, and each cell contains a small 3x3 grid. Player 1 places "X" and Player 2 places "O". When you make a move, the coordinate of the cell you clicked in the small grid corresponds to the coordinate of the small grid your opponent must play in next. For example, if you place your symbol in the top-right cell of a small grid, your opponent is forced to make their next move in the top-right small grid. When a player aligns three of their symbols in a small grid, they win that grid, and a large X or O is placed over it. The game is won by aligning three large conquered grids in a row, column, or diagonal on the main board.

Pro Strategies for Super Tic Tac Toe

  1. Control the Center Grid: Just like in the classic game, conquering the center small grid is extremely valuable as it participates in four potential winning lanes.
  2. Think One Step Ahead: Do not just look at winning a small cell. Look at where your move sends your opponent. Avoid sending them to a grid where they can easily win a row.
  3. Sacrifice Small Cells: Sometimes, giving up a cell in a small grid is worth it if it redirects your opponent to a grid that is already full, allowing you to choose any open slot on the board.
  4. Block Conquered Grids: If a small grid is already won, you can still send your opponent there. If sent to a won or full grid, the player gets a "free move" and can play anywhere on the board. Use this tactically.

Grid Navigation Table

  • Top-Left Cell: Opponent must play in Top-Left Grid.
  • Center Cell: Opponent must play in Center Grid.
  • Bottom-Right Cell: Opponent must play in Bottom-Right Grid.
