Courtyard
Map Traversal in Courtyard
Challenge your spatial layout memory on a massive scale with Courtyard, a single-map Sokoban adventure where all puzzles are connected. Instead of separate stages, Courtyard places all blocks, targets, and walls on a single, continuous board. As you push blocks to solve one section of the courtyard, you unlock doorways that lead to new areas, some of which require you to bring blocks from previous rooms. Players who love a classic Puzle with a deep, open-world feel will find Courtyard to be a masterfully designed logic challenge.
Courtyard Sokoban Origins
Created by Parachor, Courtyard was developed as a port to PuzzleScript Plus. It takes the classic Japanese block-pushing game and turns it into a metroidvania-style adventure. The visual style is retro-themed, featuring simple color tiles, stone floors, and wooden blocks. By connecting all puzzles on a single coordinate map, the developer created a game where your solutions in one room directly impact your ability to navigate the next, offering a highly cohesive experience.
Single-Map Pushing Rules
You control a character moving on a grid. The board is divided into rooms by stone pillars. Each room has boxes and targets. Solving a room opens a door to the next room. However, because the map is continuous, you can push boxes across room boundaries. This is crucial for solving "master" puzzles that require more boxes than are available in a single room. The game also features a secret "Holy Grail" ending that requires retrieving a hidden box from the very start of the map.
Holy Grail Secret Tips
- Keep Exit Lanes Open: When solving a room, do not push boxes into doorways, as this blocks your ability to backtrack.
- Mark Target Coordinates: Plan which box goes to which target before moving anything to avoid locking paths between rooms.
- Backtrack to Retrieve Boxes: To unlock the secret ending, solve early rooms in a way that leaves one box unblocked, allowing you to push it forward later.
- Use the Undo Log: Since the map is massive, the undo function keeps a long history. Press it repeatedly to correct multi-room errors.
Map Controls
- Arrow Keys / WASD: Move your character and push boxes across the courtyard.
- Z Key: Undo your previous movement or push step.
- R Key: Reset the entire courtyard map (use with caution as it resets all rooms).
